Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Laketran has a remarkable reputation locally and nationally for providing service to citizens with disabilities
above and beyond what is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
In 1986, when Laketran merged with Special Transportation Services (STS),
it did not establish limitations on which citizens would have access to the service.
This was a visionary decision long before the ADA was enacted into law.
Today, this open access remains.
Citizens with disabilities, who live within ¾ of a mile of a local fixed route and due
to their disability cannot get to a bus stop, may be eligible for special service
accommodations under the ADA on Laketran’s Dial-a-Ride service.
This distance is the federally mandated standard of measurement for transit
systems across the United States of America to use in determining paratransit eligibility.
Citizens completing a Laketran ADA application may have to complete a medical and
functional evaluation to determine eligibility.
Laketran’s ADA application may be requested by contacting Laketran’s ADA coordinator
at 440-350-1064 or ppryatel@laketran.com.
Benefits to ADA Certification:
- Eligible for next day paratransit service to destinations that also fall
within the ¾ mile distance to the fixed route
- Eligibility may be year-round or conditional
- When traveling to other cities, your ADA certification must be recognized
and honored for up to 21 days of service in that community.
The same ¾ mile from fixed route origin and destination criteria apply across the country.
